Quit Arguing with Yourself

How many times have you argued with yourself about doing something you knew you were supposed to do?  You know you’re supposed to exercise, eat right, drink water and think positive thoughts, but when you are tired, hurting, cranky and bloated, it’s very easy to rationalize your way out of doing what you know you need to do.

Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger.  Everybody has these thoughts and situations on a regular basis.  It’s always easier to wait for tomorrow to start.  We all have a long list of reasons why we can’t do it right now.  But we also know deep down we want to feel better physically, mentally and have more energy.  This is where the argument begins.

So how do you win this argument with yourself?

I have developed a three step process to keep myself on track with my wellness decisions.  First, I make my wellness decisions based love for my family.  Second, I do the right thing so I can contribute to my community and my country.  And finally, I structure my day in such a way so I know I have time to exercise and not put myself into situations that could lead into making bad choices for my health.

The first two steps in this process come back to the fact you won’t do what’s right long-term unless you anchor your behavior to someone other than yourself.  All great things ever accomplish in the history of mankind were done because of something bigger than yourself.

Wars, works of art, governments, religion and many other feats of mankind tapped into a higher passion to find the energy to accomplish what they did.  You can tap into that same passion to fuel your healthy lifestyle.

First you have to figure out who you’re doing it for.  Are you going to do it so you can watch your grandkids play ball?  Do you want to stay healthy so you spouse can enjoy your company well into your 90’s?  Do you have a novel to write, a project or some other life event you have always dreamed of to help mankind?  These are things you can draw your passion from.  Once you have a clear picture of whom you are getting healthy and staying healthy for, the arguments in your head become less frequent.

Finding your passion is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself, because it takes the selfish nature of being human and allows this energy to be used for a greater good.  The best part is this greater good is it is also beneficial for you so it’s a win-win situation.

The final step is to crate a personalized system to keep you in tune with your true passions and desires.  This is a totally personal process, but you know its working when things work smoothly and you feel really good about yourself because you’re working towards what you’re passionate about.

So find your passion, link it to your new healthy lifestyle and create a system to work on your passion every day.  How can you argue with that?
