Did You Just Swallow A Rock?
How many times have you finished eating and asked yourself this question? It seems like your food just sits in your gut. You feel bloated. You get heartburn. Overall, you just feel terrible because the food that tasted so good in your mouth is now causing you tons of grief in your stomach.
This scene is played over and over in your life. I know you are sick and tired of taking antacids or medications that lead to problems down the road. You know there has to be an answer to your digestive problems, but you just don’t know where to turn.
There are many factors to consider when we look into your digestion, such as: the quality of the food, stomach acids and enzymes, small intestine bacterial population and overall pH. This article will explain each of these factors and give you a better understanding of digestion to make an informed decision about your current situation. Then you can decide if you should take the next step to fix your problem.
The quality of today’s food is but a shadow of what it once was. In 1950, an orange contained 100 mg of Vitamin C. By 1990, the amount was down to 5 mg. Over the last 90 years our food supply has been under attack. The best example of this attack is “white bread”. During World War II, the US government decided to boost nutrition to help in the war effort. Scientists analyzed the difference between 100% whole grain bread and white bread. The only difference discovered with instrumentation of the day was white bread didn’t contain thiamin. They couldn’t discover all of the phytonutrients, cofactors and mineral activators within 100% whole wheat bread with such primitive instruments.
Because they didn’t understand how a complete vitamin complex worked, the US government decided to “enrich” white bread with 3 vitamins (niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin) and one mineral, iron. This “enrichment” continues to lead our nation down the path of becoming the most obese, unhealthy, educated population in the world. Our ability to fight disease, handle stress and control our blood sugar is all directly related to the amount of refined and enriched foods consumed. Another effect our poor food supply has had on our population is our genetic transmission of vital healthy traits to our children.
The University of Florida conducted a study on male sperm count for several years. In 1929, the average male sperm count in the US was 100 million per ml. By 1973, the sperm count had dropped to 60 million. In 1980, the count had dropped to 20 million. What happened? Could it be our poor quality food has allowed a decrease in our ability to reproduce properly?
The second main problem is the amount of stomach acid and enzymes available for digestion. You must have an ample amount of stomach acid available to activate the enzymes secreted into your stomach. Most people don’t have enough acid, not too much. The majority of the heartburn is due to acid formation from the food rotting in the nice warm moist stomach, not from excess stomach acid. If you don’t have enough stomach acid, you cannot activate your stomach enzymes.
Lack of enzymes is suspected when acid supplementation doesn’t eliminate the entire problem. Enzyme depletion is very common if you eat mostly refined and processed foods. These foods have been stripped of all the natural enzymes during the refining process. Also, if you have had your gallbladder removed you need both acid and enzyme help.
A third factor in your digestion dilemma is small intestine bacterial growth. Problems in your small intestine can become very large problems and are rarely addressed properly. Your small intestine is populated with 300 to 500 different types of bacteria. Recent studies have discovered your small intestine gut flora is as individualized as your fingerprint. But overgrowth of toxic bacteria can lead to general symptoms that can go on for years and never be diagnosed properly.
The biggest culprit is called Candida. A Candida infection zaps your energy, causes autoimmune problems, headaches and many other general symptoms. Once you discover you have these issues, there are effective ways to treat it.
There is an easy self test to check for Candida. Fill a clear glass with tap water as soon as you get out of bed in the morning. Before you brush your teeth, eat or drink anything, spit into the glass of tap water. If the spit becomes stringy or sinks to the bottom, you have a Candida problem. If your spit floats or remains on the top without becoming stringy, you don’t have much of a problem.
The final part of your digestive picture is your pH throughout your entire digestive tract. The normal oral pH is 7.4. The normal stomach pH is 1-2. The normal small intestine pH is 8.3. Finally, the normal large intestine pH is 6.8. So as you can see, your pH changes dramatically throughout your digestive tract. If your stomach pH is too high, you can’t kill parasites, viruses and food borne pathogens. If your small intestine pH is too low, your normal intestinal flora cannot grow and thrive. And finally, if your large intestine pH becomes alkaline it can lead to polyp formation.
